Note: The following article was the first major piece I wrote about Napoleon back in 1995 - by coincidence the same year that Ben Weider set up The International Napoleonic Society. There has always been a massive interest in Napoleon, not only by historians but also by a myriad of collectors scattered all over the globe. Equally there has been a sustained effort by the ignorant or those with axes to grind to churn out the same old lies and misinformation about Napoleon. I am an English historian, but the historical facts, natural justice and fair play all indicate that the so-called Napoleonic Wars had far more to do with unelected divine right royal families of Europe trying to hold onto their empires and their vast privileges at a time when ordinary people lived basic and hard lives that had not changed for centuries. Then along came Napoleon - and the breath of freedom surged inside a million lungs and the desire for self-improvement and careers based on natural ability - swelled a million hearts.
